Daily Oral Language Skills

This is our attempt to assist parents in helping their children study for DOL tests. DOL Tests are given every two weeks and cover the previous two weeks work. Skills build upon the previous weeks knowledge so occasional review of all skills is important.

Week 1-10

Spelling errors.

Capitalization of the first word in a sentence.

Capitalization of days of the week and months of the year.

End marks: periods.

Subject-verb agreement.

Present and past tense verbs.

Pronouns me and I.

Possessive nouns require an apostrophe before adding -s.

Using periods after an abbreviation.

Capitalization of names of people.

End marks: question marks

Quotation marks.

Commas between day and year when writing a date.

Commas between city and state in an address or sentence.

Apostrophe use in contractions and possessive nouns.

How-to Paragraphs: Students should be able to give step-by-step directions using complete sentences, good spelling and appropriate ending punctuation. They should be able to write sequence their ideas.

Ending Punctuation: Statements = .    Question = ?    Exclamation = !

Capitalization Rules: Capitalize names and titles of people; names of special places; days of the week; months of the year; names of holidays; titles of books, stories and poems;

Friendly Letters: Students should know the five parts of a friendly letter and how to use them appropriately: heading, greeting, body, closing, and signature.

Envelopes: Students should know how to properly address an envelope using a return address and a mailing address. They should also be able to write their own address and phone number including their area code.

Suffixes: -less and -ful
